Jan I think what they are saying is that if you choose New -> XHTML it is using default.html as the template file and not default.xhtml

I understand. But I explained PSpad behavior. For new file is used file default.[extension] where extension is same as file you create.

If he need to have XHTML content for HTML files, he need to modify default.html

Not that it bothers me very often, but I can also confirm this surprising behaviour; creating new HTML as well as XHTML file uses "default.html"
File: New: HTML/ XHTML works the same as the dropdown list of the New icon.

The newly created files contain in both cases the text of default.html and has the name like NewX.html, however the statusbar contains the correct information about the syntax (HTML or XHTML).

The only working way to get a new XHTML file seems to be
File: New: Use template: XHTML: Default
this way an empty NewX.xhtml file is created and filled with default.xhtml.

Again and really last time.

If you create new file, pspad looks for file ith name "default" and same extension as your new file and uses it as template.

You can modify template as you need. Maybe I delete all templates and al will be satisfied, because you will need to write your own.
Of you can use New file dialog and choose template.

I don't know, why HTML uses for for different formats same extension. It's request for other place then PSPad forum.

If I create template with name identified by highlighter, it will be OK for HTML/XHTML, but bad for all other. See e.g. C++, where is different file content for CPP, H, RC and all new files for C highlighter will use same template?

Removing *.html file mask from the highlighter specification for XHTML resolves that.

Thanks MrSpock, that was it!
I'm sorry for the noise in forum, I somehow didn't get, that this setting would have influence on that behaviour.

The trick is to order the extensions in
Settings > Highlighter Settings... > XHTML > Specification > File masks:

to
*.xhtml
*.html
*.htm

because PSPad use the first item of this list
to chose "default.ext" template for this syntax.
(you could even add *.txt to the first place in this list
to get an new *.txt file while executing Ctrl+N > XHTML.)

Just order the extension by simple copy&paste them (as in an text document)

-

Maybe Jan should set the desired order (main extension to top of list) in one of the next releases?
