Hello.
I will investigate, how to do it. I must try it.

hi, confirmed that PSPad saves always with an extension, defaulted to ".txt" even if you explicitly change the mask to *.* and save something like "somefilename." (with the dot at the end)

Yes, I tested it. Unfortunely it needs code fix.
After fix (in next developer build) when you change filter to *.* in default you will save file without extension.

For now only workarround is to create user highlighter, add file mask *. (nothing else can be done) and use this highlighter for editing files

It works!
Funny thing is that the files without an extension are automatically opened with the (in my case) EmptyExt highliter

Thanks for the answer and probably the fix.
I had now the the dev Version 5.0.3 (371) and want to "change filter to *.* in default" like you wrote... but not sure what you are meaning here.
In Settings, Files and Dirs, New default, I don't have an option *.*
If I choose *.* when I save a file, extension .txt is added.
Thanks for a short info for dummy people like me.

In the save dialog change file type to *.* (under file name).

I get always the .txt extension added
Don't matter if I choose the otion Save or Save as...
