Unable to Check for Updates

#1 Unable to Check for Updates

Posted by: MarkRH | Date: 2025-12-08 05:36 | IP: IP Logged

Decided to check for updates via Help -> Check For Updates and got a dialog box saying it can't connect to the internet. First time I've seen this. I am running 5.5.2 (831) which is the latest dev build it looks like.

No settings to really change in the internet settings. I don't have proxy checked.

Outside of the program I can get to pspad.com fine.

Do you use any proxy server?
When PSPad checks new version, it opens
www.pspad.com
or
www.pspad.com
This page returns 1 line with current version

I am not using a Proxy server.

I just checked again and it worked fine. Whatever was causing it before seems to have sorted itself out.

I did shut down my PC for awhile today but not sure if that would have had anything to do with it.

Anyway, for now it's solved.

Thought I would add to this to say the problem seems to be with AT&T's DNS servers. If I check for updates 3 or 4 times it eventually finds it.

Same thing if I ping pspad.com from a DOS command prompt. A couple times it can't find it and then it does.

I would even see it with Firefox not finding the forum. If I change Firefox to use DNS over HTTPS with Cloudflare handling the DNS, it never has a problem finding the forum.

So, don't think it's anything wrong with the program. Probably need to contact AT&T and find why their DNS severs are a bit flaky when it comes to certain domains.

It can be related to recent Cloudflare problems

You might be right. I noticed this after Cloudflare had their big outage in November. Hmm, looks like had another one on December 5th. Possibly related.

Anyway, I know how to get by now.

I’d also check whether the file encoding and line endings are what PSPad expects, since those can sometimes cause odd behavior. Reopening the file in a fresh instance of PSPad has helped me troubleshoot similar issues before.
