When I hit ENTER, how to turn off entry of asterisk?

PSPad 5.0.0 on Windows 10.

I edit Markdown files using PSPad, which are plain text files. Sometimes I have a line where I enter a single asterisk * to begin italics. Then at the end of the line full of text I hit ENTER, and on the next line PSPad inserts another asterisk.

How do I stop this behavior? When I hit ENTER I do not want PSPad to insert an asterisk at the beginning of the next line of text.

I think I've asked this before years ago but I cannot see the past posts that I've created.
