Tabs and settings lost

PSPad has proved to be a very reliable and very useful program. I upgrade only when the program really needs it, which is at long intervals, one reason I'm using 5.0.1 (312)February 2019. Today on three occasions I lost the tabs with my eight regular text files, the background colour, word wrap, and history. I was able to load the text files but they vanished again, and after three times the novelty is wearing off.

Can someone please advise what is happening, and if it may be fixed by upgrading? Thanks.

Open copy PSpad.ini and Recent.ini outside of PSPad folder or PSPad config folder (%APPData%/PSPad)
Open those files and check if they are not corrupted - strange chars, insonsistent text.
There should be 2 types of lines:
[section name]
variable=value
