#1 [REQUEST] - Synchronized scrolling on splitted windows

Posted by: mausan66 | Date: 2015-11-17 20:52 | IP: IP Logged

Hi everyone,

I searched the forum to see if anybody else had ever requested this feature in the past, and I was quite surprised to find nothing.

Synchronized scrolling on splitted windows is very useful for comparing parts of text on the same file (e.g. similar parts of code).

This feature is available in Notepad++ and UltraEdit, and I would like to have it also in my preferred text editor, possibly with options for vertical and/or horizontal synchronization.

Thanks.

This feature is in PSPad m,any eyars. I think it Notepad++ takes it from PSPad.

When you have 2 window opened, right click on the nonactive window tab and choose "Synchronize mooving". It will split window and lock schrolling in both Windows.
If the split will be Horizontally or vertically is set in Program settings / Editor 2 - Split horizontal for synchronize option

Thanks for your reply.

I often use the synchronized scrolling for editing two different files side-by-side, in the same way you have described.

But I don't know how to do the same when I need to compare similar parts of code *in the same file*. I haven't found a way to open a single file in two different windows yet. I can only vertically split the window to show the two differents parts of code, but in this case there is no option for synchronized scrolling.

Is it possible to open the same file in two different windows?

Thanks again

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but this still isn't possible in the current version and I'd like to add my voice to the request: being able to synchronise scrolling to compare two different functions in two views onto the same file would be very helpful.

if you have open 2 windows, right click on nonactive tab and select vertical/horizontal split to see both windows
scroll both windows to position you need

right click on nonactive tab and select synchronize moving

Hi,
I believe, opening the same file in more than one file-tabs of PSPad isn't currently possible (the previously opened tab with that file is activated in that case).

However, it is quite easy to work around it, one can copy the content of the file to a new file-tab (and possibly lock it as readonly via context menu of the tab - to avoid confusion for editing); it is even not needed to save this temporary file copy; the usual operations including splitting the view and synchronized scrolling are then available.

It could be a little bit easier for this way of comparing/editing if opening the same file multiple times - in different tabs - were allowed, but I can imagine, it could be confusing (and possibly harmful in case of collisions) for far more usual usecases. E.g. while opening a file via file manager, it is currently not needed to check, whether it is eventually already open - in that case, that tab is just activated.

Alternatively, some specialised function such as CloneInNewTabReadonly ... are possible, but it can be probably easily achieved with scripting as well.

hth,
vbr

Opening one file on more tabs is possible in PSPad, but you don't need it.
You can split view of one file by clicking right mouse on file tab and vertical/horizontal split

If you insist to open file more times in different tabs, go to the menu file / Open Special / Open R/O copy of active file.
You can open as much copies as you want.
New copy is intentionally marked as R/O to prevent edit copy instead of the "main" file.

And of course you can switch on synchronize move as I wrote in my previous answer.

But you can't switch on synchronize move when you've split the file. That's entirely the point.

As to the rest, I'm aware that there are workarounds to achieve what I want; the point I'm (obviously failing, but) trying to make is that if we could enable the "synchronize move" button on a split tab, assuming it's a simple thing to do, it would solve the problem. All other solutions just don't work, because you may want to make changes to both sides of the split, so copying to a different window and then copying back, or making changes in the first window, will introduce the likelihood of error.

It shouldn't be so big problem.
