#1 Crash when editing file in hex mode

Posted by: jojo | Date: 2019-06-04 16:39 | IP: IP Logged

Using PSPad 32-bit version 5.0.1 (312) on Windows 10 Professional x64, I can reliably crash the application by opening a file in hex editor mode and then just keeping a key pressed to overwrite a sequence of bytes. After a while, I either get an access violation message box or the application just shuts down without any notice. The amount of bytes after which this occurs differed on two machines I tested this on, sometimes it was after less than 64 bytes, in other cases it took up to overwritten 256 bytes until the application would crash.

Hello
Can you repeat your problem with version 5.0.2? Available in developer forum

It also crashes with version 5.0.2 321 (32-bit).

Unfortunately the crash dialog doesn't show up as the application just shuts down immediately. Is there another way to generate a log for you?

This is still happening in 5.0.2, but not always. When it does, PSPad now just hangs, without showing a crash dialog.

Download pkease current 5,0,3 build. Try to describe how to get exception. If i will be able to simulate it, it would be easier to fix it

It also happens with the latest developer build.

All I'm doing is:

1. Open a file in hex editor mode
2. Start typing into the hex view

I have figured out that the behaviour changes depending on the size of the file.

Here are two videos of what happens when I hex-edit a file of 26 KB (the editor goes crazy!) and a 1 MB file (crash dialog):

Do you mean the log that is seen in the dialog? As you can see in the video, I cannot access the window with the log because the Access Violation dialog keeps popping up in front of it. Is there another way to access the log, e.g. is it written to a file?
