How to post a post (IMHO, stefan) ver1.0

image

1)
Its not bad to read the help.
Go to the program part where you need help
and press F1. On the other hand,
because Jan is quicker in programming
than in updating the help,
the help is mostly out of date.
------------------------------------------------------------
2)
Most questions are already answert in the forum.
So search the forum first for your request.
Search for different words to find most of the posts.

Use this "FAQ thread" ==> forum.pspad.com
and this "Thread for links to further informations" ==> forum.pspad.com
as well.
------------------------------------------------------------
3)
Be sure to have the newest build from PSPad.
Jan improve PSPad day by day.
All Betas are stable and could
be copied over a full installation.
(But no software is secure, so backup your work first!)
------------------------------------------------------------
4)
If you could test on other PCs or with other files
or older PSPad builds please do that to come closer
and tell us the differences.
------------------------------------------------------------
5)
Be sure that no other software produce this error.
Disable other software and test again.
------------------------------------------------------------
6)
Discover the menu and the settings, read the help
and serach the forum with other key words again.
------------------------------------------------------------
7)
If you have found an older thread where your
problem belongs too, join this to make your opinions.
------------------------------------------------------------
8)
Check your settings, other running programs and your self again.
------------------------------------------------------------
9)
Choose the right forum:
"2. PSPad editor - English discussion forum" ==> for new features or for help requests.

"3. Bug report / Hlen chyb" ===> for reporting an bug.

"4. Translation" ==> for suggestion to improve translations, or to post newest translations.
(Use existen threads to post your translation, dont open a new thread for every new build)

Dont use the beta forum for your problem,
exemption your problem belongs directly to this build.

Sure, Jan get your post on the wrong place nevertheless,
but others user with the same problem dont know about them,
because the dont see a post about it and ask the same
question again and again.
And of course the thread gets more and more unreadable.
------------------------------------------------------------
10)
Choose an clever supject line:
Dont use generic words but an description to the point.
Keep in mind that someone sometimes search for to
solve an problem like yours too and would be happy to find
it by your supject line. Or you be happy to find such an thread too.
------------------------------------------------------------
11)
Describe whats happens step by step.
Describe what you have done till now to solve the problem to not waste time.
Describe what you have changed on your hard -or software.
Describe most precisely what you want / need / wish / suggest.
Keep in mind: we sit not behind you to know what you mean and we are no visionarys.
Tell us your operation system, language setting and your PSPad build.
------------------------------------------------------------
12)
If you got an "error.log" dont post it, send it to ''.phorum_html_encode('support@pspad.com').''
Post only in "3. Bug report / Hlen chyb" that you
have sendet a eMail to the author already about this so other know too.
Note point 10 + 11 too!
------------------------------------------------------------
13)
Please be patient till someone answers you.
All have to do there own work, particulary Jan.
He have to do his job and spend a lot of his spare
time to improve PSPad and could not answer in no time. (often he do nevertheless)
------------------------------------------------------------
14)
Try to understand what others tell you and test again bevor you post again.
Since others dont know your skill dont be cross if they undervalue you, no one want to affront you.
Keep in mind that english isnt the natural mother languages of the most of us.
So often people simple use not the right words. (me too) Ask again if you dont understand.
------------------------------------------------------------
15)
Please give an feedback if your problem is gone and *why* its solved.
Dont post "Thanks, i solved it myself" but help others to do this too.
Explain most correctly what you have done to solve it.
Some people helps to learn themself so let them know what happens or not.
------------------------------------------------------------

My kindly note:

Thanks for your comprehension.

Q: In highlighter settings i've used up all 5 General items for own user highlighters.
Is there any way to get more? The 5 kinds User Highter is not enough for me.

A: It`s on Jans todo list. Till then you could use an work around,
you could use and modify existend highlighter:

Just modify ".\PSPad\Context\ *.DEF" and ".\PSPad\Syntax\*.INI" files,
delete the pre-define strings and wrote your own into.
Than change file types in Highlighter Settings.
Not nifty, but i could help you a while.

Heres an examble with the COBOL highlighter if you dont need them:

- got to Settings\Highlighter Settings...
--- choose COBOL
------ chose [Specification] tab
--------- modify "Filter name"
--------- delete ".CBL" and ".COB" file types,,,,,,, and add the file typ you need.
--------- close Highlighter Settings...

- open the Cobol.DEF file (Settings>Edit Clip Def...), delete the old entrys,,,,, and create the clips you need

- create an Cobol.ini (if not exist in .\PSPad\Syntax folder) and fill in the keywords you want.

- Fill highlighter name
- Fill file extensions

- Select string type
- Fill allowes chars
- Fill key word (& reserved word) list
Save highlighter

2.) How to tell PSPad to use new highlighter ?

Menu Settings / Highlighter settings

- Go to tab named "Specification"
- On the right side is list of user highlighters. Select the one you created (with 1.) and click on it.

--------------------------------
Author: pspad Date: 07-26-2005

1. open help and read last chapture "User highlighter"
2. if you want complex syntax (e.g. HTML with included script - JScript, PHP, ASP), you must:
- assign user highlighter to one of General highlighter position in highlighter settings (again described in help chapure above)
- in Program settings / Multihighlighter set ASP for <% %>

Q: On the right side there is a grey thin line crossing the text area.
Is it possible to eleminate it?

A: It's for word wrap function, there the line would break.

The right edge line is used not only for wordwrap (if set to [x]wrap with right edge),
but for other formating function from menu Format, e.g.
Reformat paragraph
Align Center / Right
...

You can quickly set right edge location by click on ruller.

If you don't need that go to
Settings | Program Settings | Editor - Settings
and set "Position of right edge" to 2000 or higher.

New variable WordWrapEnabled in [special settings] section in pspad.ini.
Default state is 0 - wordwrap is disabled. If you want actual buggy wordwrap, you must enable it.

Hi,
maybe this is from interest for some of you ?

Discover the power of PSpad

I use this to convert "unins000.dat" files from installers to readable files
for to see what the installer have done.
This converter search for unwanted chars and replace them by... nothing.

Here's an howto to extract reable text from an binary file:
You should work always with an copy of your important files.
Try this with smaler files only! With an 3MB file this can take some minutes
and PSPad will need +60MB RAM, so i do this for 100kB files only

PSPad isn't meant for this issue, try instead Foundstone Inc. 's BinText v3.0.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) - open the unins000.dat file
If your file is opened in hex mode do this:
A) PSPad | Settings | Program Settings
B) press [Direct [u]e[/u]dit] button
C) modify "AutoDetectBinary=1" to =0 (AutoDetectBinary=0)
D) goto 1)

2) - use Tools | User Convertors | Del_Unwanted_Chars
3) - do a regex search for ^.{1,4}$ and replace with nothing
4) - Edit | Lines Manipulation | Remove blank Lines
5) - select with ALT+left mouse the remaining chars in the first position
of some lines and delete this chars (you will see what i mean)
6) - do some other cosmetics as change computer- and username
7) - press F12 and save the file as unins000.txt

Save this code (the blue chars only) as "Del_unwanted_Chars.ini" in PSPad\Converter folder

#19 Re: F A Q - Frequently-Asked Questions about PSPad

Posted by: Stefan | Date: 2005-07-31 20:20 | IP: IP Logged

Q: How to insert text into an column of selected text?

  When I turn the block-mode on (e.g. <Alt>+<leftMouseButton>
or by a click statusbar) and type something in, I would think,
that PSPad insert my typed characters in all lines,
that are selected by Column-Mode-feature, but it isn't like this.
PSPad is changing the mode to the "normal" mode, soones I press a key,
with the result, that the letter is inserted ONLY in the first line of my selection.

A: Author: CodeDigger Date: 03-16-2005
  Column mode is for cut-and-paste.
It is not a bug, Jan just designed it that way.
You can add the same text to a number of lines by

Edit -> Lines Manipulation -> Insert Text into Lines...
or press Alt-I

It is not so quick and straightforward as just typing in your text, though.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: OK, then I suppose there is no way to insert a character in the middle of a line...

A: Author: Jan
  Use Search/replace with regular expressions

e.g.
Search: (sub ex 1)(.*)
Replace: $1 insert this $2
[x]Regular expression

related thread...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Examples Author: Stefan

You could use search & replace without regular expressions sometimes too,
just use your brain:

e.g.
for this text
Given name 1, Name1, Address1, ...
Given name 2, Name2, Address2, ...

you could column select from name 1, to Name and down
search for ,~ (means search for an comma and an space what i mark here as ~)
and replace with ,~Mr.~ (replace with an comma, an space and your text to insert, here Mr., and an another space)

to get
Given name 1, Mr. Name1, Address1, ...
Given name 2, Mr. Name2, Address2, ...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW:

With PSPad [x]Regular expression you could also paste
text bevor and after a line (like "Insert Text into Lines" option)

reg ex search for ^ for the beginn of an line
and replace with what you want to paste text bevor an line.

reg ex search for $ for the end of an line
and replace with what you want to paste text after an line.

Select some lines bevor to modify those lines only.

#20 Re: F A Q - Frequently-Asked Questions about PSPad

Posted by: Stefan | Date: 2005-08-06 12:45 | IP: IP Logged

Q: What for is "User Variables..." in Settings menu ?

A: Author: pspad Date: 08-06-2005

User variables you can use in Clips - (press F1 for help, Index => Clip)

e.g. you define in User variables
%MyTestVariable%=3.141592654

In clip list you can write:
[pi | Insert my variable content]
%MyTestVariable%
;

to get 3.141592654 if you write pi in your doc and press Ctrl+Space.

You must add or modify the clip in the language.DEF you use with your
language/filetype, e.g. "PSPad\Context\HTML.def" for html files.

You didn't must use UserVars, you could wrote 3,1415... directly in the clip unter "[pi | Insert my variable content]",
but the other way you could modify the value at easy from the menu.

You could also use the build-in variables in clips,
e.g. %FileName%, %Company% or %Date% and so on.

f.ex:
[date | Inser the current date]
%Date%
;
for to get "Samstag, 6. August 2005"

Check out PSPad menu "Settings | User Variables..."
for to adjust the date format (and for to del the last -> ,dd from the date var)
and for to find the other vars smiling smiley
