#1 general questions about translations

Posted by: Jume | Date: 2006-02-15 13:17 | IP: IP Logged

First, sorry for creating a topic like this in here, but I think it can be interesting for other people who want to translate as well.

Ok, I started updating the spanish translation a while ago, but needed to stop it for some reasons, i'll retake the work again very soon so I ask my doubts:

#1 .- What users want?
When translating, there's a field for the name of the option, and a field for its description, the typical way to put the description is as a verb, e.g: button Close -> Close the active document. This description will appear both in hint and in status bar, what I want to know is: do the users really prefer it as a verb or it can be better as an action? e.g: It closes the active document (think in my language there's no need to put the it).
As I said, the typical way in any Windows application is as a verb, but it's worth asking.

#2 .- What is better, well translated or short length?
Descriptions can be very long in order to make it truly define what a button or option does, so, it is good for people to put foreign words to make it shorter or to make a correct translation even if it means long enough to don't fit the status bar area?

#3 .- Is the english language file always updated in the new versions/betas?
I mean, are the old options removed?, and, the options that CAN HAVE descriptions (e.g. buttons and menu options) ALWAYS have a description attached? (meaning the ones that can't, won't have it).

#4 .- Using this forum/thread to ask doubts.
Is it good or bad (I mean mainly this thread)? Asking here anyone can read, asking by mail, evidently not.
E.g. in order to know where a text is appearing cause I can't find it.

For now I think it's all, maybe more to come, maybe not winking smiley

Yes. All other languages except English and Czech are assembled again. Missing strings are added from English translation and marked with the ;;Translate comment

all the doubts in the ACTION LIST group:

1.- how to find in the program and what does:

aBlockSum - calculate block
ahexdump - hexdump
ahexoffset - hex offset
aKeyToLower - all keywords to lower case
aKeyToupper - all keywords to upper case
aLockLineNum - synchronize with line number
aLockWindows - lock scrolling
aProjClose - hide project
aProjSwitch - switch view
aRepeatLastAction - repeat last command
aSaveSameTime - save without changing file date
aSortFiles - sort by name
aToolBar - toolbar

aQuote - insert text into lines

2.- these appear only in config/keymap, is that true?

aBlockSelect - block selection
aClipRun - run clip
aDelMark - del bookmark
aExitEsc - exit with esc
aMarkDown - next bookmark
aMarkUp - previous bookmark
aSetMark - set bookmark

3.- aTopStyle has no caption???

4.- what does EXACTLY "show oem chars"? (needed to write its hint)

5.- which differences are between reformat -> blank line and reformat -> short line?

6.- how works the "open with program"?? (not needed for translation but i can't get it to work)

menu Tools - select (column) block of numbers and call it

> ahexdump - hexdump

menu View - switch to Hex mode

> ahexoffset - hex offset

obsolete now, I will remove it

> aLockLineNum - synchronize with line number
> aLockWindows - lock scrolling

Right mouse on the File tab

> aRepeatLastAction - repeat last command

menu Tools - repeat near any last action

> aSaveSameTime - save without changing file date

Context menu next Save button command, saves file without filedate change

> aSortFiles - sort by name

project context menu - sorts files in the project

> aToolBar - toolbar

menu View/Toolbars - show / hide toolbar (F2)

You call it with shortcuts - prepared for user configurable toolbars

> 3.- aTopStyle has no caption???

There is nothing to translate

> 4.- what does EXACTLY "show oem chars"? (needed to write its

switch view from ANSI to OEM chars - you can use it to view semigraphics e.g. in .NFO files

> 5.- which differences are between reformat -> blank line and

detection of the end of paragraph

> 6.- how works the "open with program"?? (not needed for
> translation but i can't get it to work)

it opens file with windows associated application

> ahexdump - hexdump

menu View - switch to Hex mode

it is not, the string to that is "aHexView-edit in hexa"

> aLockLineNum - synchronize with line number
> aLockWindows - lock scrolling

Right mouse on the File tab

they're not there, the synchro is "mLockIt-synchronize moving", maybe outdated ones?

> aSaveSameTime - save without changing file date

Context menu next Save button command, saves file without filedate change

again, it is not... i begin to think my version is not right? (how can that be?!?) yawning smiley

> aToolBar - toolbar

menu View/Toolbars - show / hide toolbar (F2)

nopers, string is in "aShowControlBar-show/hide panel", maybe an oldie also?

-----------------------------------------

now with the new ones, hehe

1.- "lEmail-click to contact..." & "lWWW-click to visit..." & "lInfosDescr-drink producers" do nothing?? (about dialog)

2.- "rs_LinkDir-folders", "rs_LinkFile-files", "rs_LinkMisc-tools", "rs_LinkWeb-www" do not appear to change nothing either (links group, supposed to change the favorites panel?)

3.- where are these?:
"cCopyNonMatching - copy non matching" -> (find replace)
"lKeyWords - key words" -> (user highlighters)
"tabFind - settings", "tabResult - results" -> (find in files)
"bRunStat - detailed statistics" -> (file info)
"aGotoSource - goto source" -> (code explorer)
"tbOpenFileDir - Synchronize with file" -> (ftp)

----

just bumping

first, i'm sorry
second, posting here as i said, i'm hoping to help not only me, but any translator to keep clean and updated the files

please god of pspad, have some patience with me, i feel already the steel of that axe in my neck (i said sorry!), eeew...

btw, if any translator reading this thread, you (yes YOU) can also post sometimes if you know the answers to the doubts, don't let jan have all the hard work (and i know support is TOUGH)

i've tried very hard (and i mean VERY hard) to see these working, some of these are supposed to be error messages, but it seems i can't force those errors in pspad, so i'm not sure if they are really there, also take in count that some seemingly obvious strings are not that obvious, and i mean most of those obvious thoughts are already translated and working, the strings i can't find are these (im including the ones from previous posts that were not solved):

--------------------------------------------

things i found related to this, but that are not needed really to finish a translation:

hint for "program settings / program-appereance / file tab caption format" is not translated?
hint for aLangHelp_Hint - language help is not displayed
varja projeckt?????? (program settings / key map / project) - aka - i don't know what is this (it is not in english translation either)
log parse debugger is not translated
special conversions (ansi <-> url, ansi <-> base64, ...) are not translated
utf formats in format menu have not translation nor hint (not so useful the translation, but the hint is not that bad)
line breaks in format menu have not translation nor hint (not so useful the translation, but the hint is not that bad)
headers for the ftp list and file explorer list have not translation?
chmod (option) and ftp chmod (dialog title) have not translation?
all of the groups in key map config have not translation?
internal browser is not translated
toolbars macros and html have not caption nor hint in the menu view / toolbars

--------------------------------------------

things i need if you want to please me even more:

if you can, please add 15px or so (not less) to the label for adding the hexadecimal editor to context menu in program settings / system integration (it crops me 3 letters and theres space enough to the right)

--------------------------------------------

if i'm not wrong, many of them are obsolete, but i need to ask anyways (i don't want to delete them blindly)

yeah, take all the time you want, i'm not in a hurry nor do you, anyways, these are the ONLY things left in the translation, updating the translation after this one is finished should be a breeze (i safely used 10-20% of the old one, but the rest was translated from zero)

-------------------------------------------

and well, so much thank you's, and i meant them, really smiling smiley
