Colour file tabs based on the file extension

Sorry, this is an old query, but I cannot find a reply to it so have submitted it again.

Is it possible to colour the File Tabs based on the file extension?

e.g. I have a User Config file that includes files:

*.ext1, *.ext2, *.ext3 etc

I would like to be able to colour the File Tabs differently for each file extension.

I have to think about handling extensions and colors.
Maybe join this settings to registered file type...
